This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of Brixham Belle Cruises (Carol & Peter Scott). They ran day cruises to the River Dart from Torquay (Haldon Pier) and Brixham (landing at Dartmouth) plus evening illuminations cruises. The company started when they bought the Brixham Belle, built 1960 as a private yacht. Brixham Belle was replaced in 1999 by the Brixham Belle II (formerly Devon Princess III then Torbay Princess II and now Western Lady VII). Brixham Belle is now in Gibraltar with Dolphin World, still in daily use on dolphin watching trips and is still named Brixham Belle. Brixham Belle II was replaced by Cornish Belle in 2007. Torbay Belle also joined the fleet, having previously run from Mallaig for CalMac as the Lochmor. In spring 2009, Cornish Belle was sold for use in Belfast, followed soon afterwards by the sale of Torbay Belle to Blue Line Cruises at Poole, where she will be renamed Jurassic Scene. The left the company with no vessels, and so it is presumed that no services will be run in 2009.

Brixham Belle Cruises

Brixham Belle

(Built: 1960)

 

 

Brixham Belle was built in 1960 as a 'Gentleman's Motor Yacht' in Cowes and named George Henry. The gentleman concerned could not pay for her on completion and the builder converted her to a passenger excursion boat in order to sell her on quickly and cut his losses. She was 48 gross tons and carried 120 passengers.

 

Brixham Belle was operated out of Brixham for many years by Ernie Cudd and family who mainly ran excursions to Dartmouth and up the river Dart during the day and 'Illuminations Cruises' around Torbay after dark. She was much loved by holiday makers and locals alike. After Ernie retired, she stayed in the family for a while with his son-in-law (I think) as skipper.

 

Eventually she was sold to Peter Scott and became the founding vessel for his 'Brixham Belle Cruises'. He kept her until he bought Brixham Belle II (formerly Devon Princess III then Torbay Princess II and now Western Lady VII). She is now in Gibraltar with Dolphin World, still in daily use on dolphin watching trips and still named Brixham Belle.

Brixham Belle II

(Built: 1984)

 

Brixham Belle II was built as Devon Princess III (46 grt, 65 ft, 194 pass) were built in 1984 for M.D.Barrow (Devon Princess Cruises) of Exmouth, joining Devon Princess and Devon Princess II in the fleet. They ran cruises from Exmouth and Torquay. Devon Princess II passed to M.J.& R.J.Ould of Torquay who renamed her Torbay Princess. Ould later also acquired Devon Princess III, but by 1995 she was running for previous owner M.D.Barrow again. In 1999, Devon Princess III was running for P.Scott's Brixham Belles as Brixham Belle II. In 2003, P.Scott's Brixham Belles acquired the fleet of M.J.& R.J.Ould, reuniting Torbay Princess (ex-Devon Princess II) and Brixham Belle II (ex-Devon Princess III). P.Scott began jointly operating the Torquay-Brixham ferry with the Western Lady Ferry Service. This arrangement was short-lived, and Torbay Princess (ex-Devon Princess II) and Brixham Belle II (ex-Devon Princess III) were sold to Western Lady Ferry Service, where Brixham Belle II was renamed Torbay Princess II, joining their two remaining Fairmile 'B' launches Western Lady III and Western Lady IV. When the Fairmiles were withdrawn, Torbay Princess and Torbay Princess II were renamed Western Lady VI and Western Lady VII, to run the ferry service from 2007.

Cornish Belle

(Built: 1951)

 

Cornish Belle is 51 feet long, 25 gross tons and carries 99 passengers. Cornish Belle was built by Frazer of Mevagissey for Harry Johns of Falmouth as his Queen of the Fal. He later founded Enterprise Boats who are still going strong. In 1963 she left Falmouth and went to St. Ives where she became the Cornish Belle and ran first for Paynter and then for Wilson. She returned to the Fal in 1996 with Peter Newman of Tolverne, retaining her Cornish Belle name. In 2007 he sold Cornish Belle to Carol and Peter Scott at Brixham and replaced her with the Alice-Marie from Poole, which he then renamed Queen of the Fal. At Brixham, Cornish Belle sported the 'CPS' flag on her funnel (Carol and Peter Scott). In 2009 Cornish Belle was sold for use in Belfast.

Torbay Belle

(Built: 1979)

 

Torbay Belle was built as the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry Lochmor in 1979. Torbay Belle was sold to Blue Line Cruises at Poole in 2009, where she will be renamed Jurassic Scene.
