Day 6 - Saturday 31st July 2004
Thun & Interlaken

LO: Ouchy - Lausanne Gare CFF
SBB: Lausanne - Bern
SBB: Bern - Thun
PS Blumlisalp: Thun - Interlaken West - Thun
SBB: Thun - Bern
SBB: Bern - Lausanne
LO: Lausanne Gare CFF - Ouchy

On Saturday we travelled to Thun by train, changing at Bern. At Thun we caught the BLS paddler Blumlisalp to Interlaken and back. Blumlisalp is an extremely attractive ship, but trundling around the attractive Thunersee does not compare with being on a Geneva paddle vessel. We returned via Bern again, taking time to photograph a few trams and trolleybuses, which are now in a smart red livery (they were green last time I was in Bern).

Day 7 - Sunday 1st August 2004
Yvoire - Vevey

MV Général Guisan: Ouchy - Yvoire
PS Rhône: Yvoire - Vevey (swimming)
PS La Suisse: Vevey - Pully (miniature railway)
PS Montreux: Pully - Ouchy

Sunday 1st August was the Swiss National Day, when everyone (in Lausanne at least) goes slightly nuts and behaves in a most un-Swiss manner, mainly by making lots of noise and doing highly dangerous things with fireworks. We took the early morning trip to Yvoire on the MV Général Guisan, before catching PS Rhône as far as Vevey where Alastair went swimming in the lake. We then caught PS La Suisse back to Pully (a suburb of Lausanne) where there is a miniature railway which runs on summer weekends. Finally we caught PS Montreux for the short hop back to Ouchy. The madness starts in the evening, and we confined ourselves to our hotel balcony to watch the amazing fireworks display deployed offshore from freight vessels.

Day 8 - Monday 2nd August 2004
Geneva - Rhône Express - Evian - Evening Cruise

LO: Ouchy - Lausanne Gare CFF
SBB: Lausanne - Geneva
PS La Suisse: Geneva - Evian
MV Léman: Evian - Ouchy
PS Montreux: Ouchy -Yvoire - Ouchy (Evening Cruise)

On Day 9 I decided to cover the part of the Rhône Express route which I had missed on Day 3. This required an early start from Ouchy to catch a train to Geneva. PS La Suisse left promptly at 9:15, and I stayed on her until Evian, where I met Margaret and Alastair who had travelled across from Ouchy on the MV Léman. We visited a lakeside swimming area before returning to Ouchy on MV Léman, the only time that I travelled on her. She is primarily a ferry, designed for the Ouchy-Evian shuttle, but is also used on a lunchtime cruise to Thonon-les-Bains (possibly due to the absence of PS Savoie for rebuilding?). In the evening we took the dinner cruise on PS Montreux. Food and staff are supplied by the Beau Rivage Hotel, and are of excellent quality, and not too expensive.

Day 9 - Tuesday 3rd August 2004
Morges - LEB

TL Trolleybus: Ouchy - Flon
TL Metro Line M2: Flon - EPFL
TL Bus: EPFL - Morges
SBB: Morges - Lausanne
LEB: Flon - Bercher - Echallens - Flon

For our last full day we decided to see something of Lausanne itself, plus visit the castle at Morges which contains a military museum. We caught a Trolleybus into the city, for site-seeing and shopping. We then caught the TL Metro Line M2 (a tramway to most people) to EPFL (part of the University) where there is a bus connection to Morges. Swiss transport connections are sometimes too efficient, and the bus had left by the time we worked out which station exit to use. We returned to Lausanne via SBB, and I then travelled on the LEB to Bercher and back, one of the few local electric lines which I had never travelled on previously. I stopped off at Echallens to see the shed, where the preserved LEB used loco used on Sundays is kept.

Day 10 - Wednesday 4th August 2004
Geneva - Lunch Cruise

LO: Ouchy - Lausanne Gare CFF
SBB: Lausanne - Geneva
TPG: Cornavin - Les Nations - Jardin Anglais
MV Lausanne: Jardin Anglais - Jardin Anglais (Lunch Cruise)
MG: Mouettes Genevoises between Jardin Anglais - Pâquis
SBB: Geneva - Geneva Aéroport

Wednesday 4th August 2004 was our last day in Switzerland. We had an afternoon flight out, so could explore Geneva in the morning (un-encumbered by luggage which was sent from the hotel to the airport by train). We travelled to Geneva by SBB, and purchased a local day ticket for TPG, the transport operator. We sampled the tramways, including the new extension to Les Nations, before boarding the large triple-screw MV Lausanne for her lunch cruise. After this, we crossed the port via one of the small Mouettes Genevioses waterbuses (included in the day ticket) before heading for the airport.

Bécassine was built in 1931 for the Société des Mouettes Genevoises, as the M.G.No.18. Between 1941-61 she worked on the Société des Lacs de Neuchatel et Morat. She was brought back to Lake Geneva to carry diplomats between Signal-de-Bougy to Evian during negotiations on the Algerian war of independence. She was managed by CGN, although owned by the French state, and given the name Bécassine. After the conference, she was bought by CGN. She was used as a company work boat, and occasionally on services out of Ouchy. In 1985 she was sold back to her original owners, Société des Mouettes Genevoises, and now carries both previous names Bécassine and M.G.No.18. She is maintained in beautiful condition for use on circular trips from Geneva.
