Crown Odyssey - Norwegian Crown - Crown Odyssey - Norwegian Crown - Balmoral
This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the
Royal Cruise Line
vessel
Crown Odyssey
.
Crown Odyssey
was built by Meyer of Papenburg, and was delivered to
Royal Cruise Line
in 1988, a year before the line was sold to
Norwegian Cruise Line
. In 1996 the various NCL fleets were reorganised, and
Crown Odyssey
became the
Norwegian Crown
in the main NCL fleet. She was then transferred to NCL-owned
Orient Lines
, and reverted to her original name
Crown Odyssey
.
Both
Norwegian Cruise Line
and
Orient Lines
are now owned by
Star Cruises
.
In November 2002, it was announced that
Crown Odyssey
would return to the NCL fleet in September 2003. This is the official press release:-
On February 12th 2003,
Crown Odyssey
will go into dry dock in Singapore where significant changes will be undertaken. Three restaurants will be added including NCL's signature Le Bistro, an Italian pasta café and a covered al fresco dining café. The ship will also have a state-of-the-art fitness center and children's activity area added. The spa and casino will both be expanded and a number of additional cabins will be added. After she concludes her Spring India and Africa CruiseTours and completes her Summer 2003 Mediterranean season (April 28th through Sept. 1st),
Crown Odyssey
will re-enter the NCL fleet on September 15th 2003.
Crown Odyssey
was renamed back to
Norwegian Crown
with NCL. She was sold to
Fred.Olsen
in 2006, remaining on charter to NCL until 2007. She will be renamed
Balmoral
for
Fred.Olsen
.

Crown Odyssey
(Orient Lines: 2000-2003)
Crown Odyssey
was built in 1988 for
Royal Cruise Line
(RCL), who were taken over by
NCL
in 1989.
NCL
mismanaged the highly regarded
Royal Cruise Line
, and in 1996 all the ex-RCL ships were integrated into the more down-market
NCL
fleet.
Crown Odyssey
was renamed
Norwegian Crown
. Following the
NCL
purchase of
Orient Lines
(who will retain their separate identity),
Norwegian Crown
was transferred, regaining her original name
Crown Odyssey
in the process. In November 2002, it was announced that
Crown Odyssey
would return to the NCL fleet in September 2003.

. She was sold to Fred.Olsen in 2006, remaining on charter to NCL until 2007. She was then lengthened and renamed
Balmoral
for
Fred.Olsen
, for an inaugural cruise to the Canary Islands on 30th January 2008. However, this cruise was cancelled and first cruise was 13th February 2008 to Miami.
Fred.Olsen advance image of how
Balmoral
would look in her new colours
This image was prepared before Olsen decided to have her lengthened. It does not even show the ship's condition when Olsen
bought her, since the hideous spa/gym above the bridge is missing. Olsen were initially intending to remove this gym, which had
made Norwegian Crown bow heavy and harder to handle, but calculations during the lengthening design exercise indicated that
it should be retained to balance additional weight added aft.
