Manxman (1)

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the famous Midland Railway and Isle of Man Steam Packet Company (IOMSPCo) turbine steamer Manxman (1).

The Manxman (1) was built for the Midland Railway in 1904 to operate a rival service to the Isle of Man from Heysham, their new purpose-built port. She had three sets of direct drive turbines of 8500shp which gave a speed of 22.5 knots.

During the First Word War Manxman served as the secong "mixed aircraft carrier"- The IOMSPCo's Viking was the first. The mixed carriers had a hangar for seaplanes aft, and a launching pad for small landplane fighters foreward. Manxman was purchased by the Admiralty in April 1917, and was converted at Chatham Dockyard. She was the first British carrier to carry the famous Sopwith Pup. She was attached to the Battlecruiser Force at Rosyth, and supported North Sea minelaying operations. Interestingly, despite being only 13 years old, her engine power had fallen to about 6300shp, resulting in a drop of speed to around 18 knots, which was barely adequate for fleet operations. Manxman was transferred to the Mediterranean in October 1917, where she served for the rest of the war. In January 1918 she made an unsuccesful dash for Mudros, where the battlecruiser Goeben was around in the Dardanelles. Manxman was sold to the IOMSPCo in 1920.

Manxman was requisitioned again in WW2, for conversion to the radar training ship Caduceus and was scrapped in 1949.
