P&O and Princess Cruises

Page 2: 1989-1999

This page is one of a series devoted to the cruise ships of P&O and Princess Cruises, and covers new deliveries from 1989-1999. An alphabetical list of ships shown on this page is shown below. Below this are official postcards of the fleet in chronological order. Earlier cruise ships up to 1988 are shown on P&O Princess Cruises - Page 1. Ships delivered from 2000 are shown on P&O Princess Cruises - Page 3. There is a Table of Ship Histories on the P&O Header Page.

This page continues the story of the P&O and Princess Cruises fleets, covering the giant cruise ships which have joined the fleet in more recent years. Combining official cards from the two fleets shows the evolution of the original Sitmar designs of Star Princess and Crown/Regal Princess through Oriana to the Grand Class ships and P&O's Aurora, which joined the P&O fleet in 2000.

Sitmar FairMajesty (Sitmar: as ordered)
Star Princess (1) (Princess Cruises: 1989-97)
Arcadia (P&O Cruises: 1997-2003)
Ocean Village (Ocean Village: 2003-2010)

Star Princess, built 1989, was near completion in France for Sitmar Cruises, as their Sitmar FairMajesty, when the company was taken over by P&O Princess.

A complete history of this ship is shown on this link.

This advance postcard of her proposed appearance had already been issued.
Scan: Dimas Almada.

The Sitmar postcard above was modified for Princess pre-release as Star Princess.

Further Princess official cards of Arcadia are shown below.

Following the withdrawal of the Canberra, Star Princess was transferred to P&O and renamed Arcadia in late 1997. Arcadia is due to move to a new P&O Princess venture called Ocean Village in 2003.

P&O official cards of Arcadia are shown below.

This slightly over-sized card was published for the inaugural cruise as Arcadia.
A variation of the card was also issued for the first world cruise.

This standard-sized advertising card of Arcadia was distributed with issues of Radio Times magazine (and possibly elsewhere) in 2001.
Cards from the same issue had serial numbers RT1 and RT2, possibly for different areas of the country.

This attractive card of Arcadia was issued for her Caribbean cruises.

The Caribbean postcard above was reissued as the farewell P&O season postcard.

This is an advance publicity picture of how she will look.

Crown Princess (Princess Cruises: 1990-2002)
Arosa Blu (Arosa: 2002- )

Sitmar Cruises had two ships on order from Fincantieri in Italy when the company was taken over by P&O/Princess. These were completed as Crown Princess and Regal Princess but were essentially Sitmar designs. Crown Princess of 1990 is shown below. Both ships were planned to transfer to a new P&O Cruises company aimed at the German market called Arosa Cruises. Crown Princess moved in Summer 2002 as the Arosa Blu. This was not a succes, and in 2003 it was announced that Arosa Blu would transfer to the Aida Cruises fleet as Aida Blu.

A complete postcard history of this ship is shown on this link.

Regal Princess
(Princess Cruises: 1991-2004)

Sitmar Cruises had two ships on order from Fincantieri in Italy when the company was taken over by P&O/Princess. These were completed as Crown Princess and Regal Princess but were essentially Sitmar designs. Regal Princess of 1990 is shown below. Both ships were planned transfer to a new P&O Cruises company aimed at the German market called A'ROSA. Crown Princess moved in Summer 2002 as the Arosa Blu. Regal Princess was due to follow in 2004, although this will not now happen.

A complete postcard history of this ship is shown on this link.

Regal Princess of 1991.

The card of Regal Princess included in the Princess Postcard Set.

Golden Princess (1)
(Princess Cruises: 1993-96)

Golden Princess was built as Royal Viking Sky in 1972. After a spell as NCL's Sunward, she was sold to Sweden's Birka Line as Birka Queen. She was chartered to Princess as Golden Princess soon afterwards, in 1993. Following the arrival of new tonnage in 1996, the charter was ended and Birka Line rapidly sold her to Star Cruises as SuperStar Capricorn. She wqas then chartered as Hyundai Keumgang., before returning to Star Cruises as SuperStar Capricorn again.

Oriana
(P&O Cruises: 1995- )

Oriana entered service in 1995, built by Meyer-Werft of Papenburg. She was built specifically for the British market, running cruises out of Southampton, plus an annual world cruise. A complete postcard history of Oriana, with additional commercial releases, is available on this link.

This card was published by J.Arthur Dixon before she entered service, and I presume it was commissioned by P&O.

This was a pre-launch official P&O card of Oriana.
On Oriana, these cards are provided in the cabins and are available in small numbers from reception, but are not sold in the shops, which have their own series of larger cards. The shop cards are be covered in detail on the dedicated Oriana page.

This is the post-launch official P&O card of Oriana, which is still current in August 2000.

In August 2000, the shop on Oriana sold four new (oversized) postcards.
The shop franchise changed soon afterwards, and these cards are not common.
Enlarged images from these cards are available on the dedicated Oriana page.

By November 2001, the cards above had been replaced by two new Oriana postcards.
The new 2001 official P&O card is shown below.

The new 2001 official card of Oriana available in the shop is shown below.
This card was still in use in 2003.

The new official P&O card was in use on the ship in 2003.

This standard-sized advertising card of the children's pool on Oriana was distributed with magazines in 2001.
It has the serial numbers FFI. I have never seen this pool so deserted in good weather!

Not a P&O official card, but one issued by the builders, Meyer-Werft of Papenburg.
