Royal Navy
Illustrious (R06) & Ark Royal (R07)
Only one of the Royal Navy's aircraft carriers is operational as a Strike Carrier at any time.
Illustrious
assumed the role of fleet flagship in June 2005 when
Ark Royal
went for refit at Rosyth where she received a new mizzen mast visible at the end of the island structure and was converted to operate in both the Strike Carrier and Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH) roles.
Ark Royal
completed this refit at the end of 2006 and was commissioned to act as an LPH whilst the
Ocean
is at refit (so both carriers are in operational use in 2007). The third carrier
Invincible
was decommissioned in July 2005 and was placed in Extended Readiness at Portsmouth until 2010, when she is likely to be disposed of.
