Queen Elizabeth 2

Page 6: On Board Photographs 2005/2006

This page is one of a series devoted to postcards and photographs of the Cunard Liner Queen Elizabeth 2. This page covers on board photographs of QE2, mostly taken in 2005. New images for 2006 include the Princess Grill, Britannia Grill, Queens Grill, Queens Grill Lounge, One Deck cabin and the new Princess Grill Bar.

Compare these interiors with the originals on QE2 - Page 2. I think the originals were more stylish and modern in all cases. The current designs are typical of too many bland modern cruise ships, being similar to the dull pastel blues and greens of many Princess ships. I am not suggesting that she should have been refitted in the acid-crazed Carnival style, but the original 1960s styles would have made a better starting point.

Sun Deck

The Sun Deck has a forward open viewing area at the front of the superstructure, looking over the bow. Moving aft, there are cabins and suites with balconies, the Nursery, the Cinema and finally the outside Funnel Bar, with a protected sunbathing area.

Boat Deck

The Boat Deck has an open promenade running along both sides and around the aft end of the superstructure, overlooking the stern. One has to climb to the Sun Deck forward to complete a full circuit on open deck. Inside working aft, are Queens Grill, Queens Grill Lounge, Boardroom, Theatre Balcony, a number of cabins and the Royal Promenade shops (around a balcony for the Grand Lounge). Outside aft is the Sports Centre, which is rather small.

Upper Deck

Starting forward, the Upper Deck has the Kitchen and the Mauretania Restaurant, and then the Crystal Bar, all of which span the full width of the ship. There are then enclosed promenades down both sides of the ship to the Yacht Club bar aft, which is again across the width of the ship. The images below are arranged as if walking aft along the starboard side, returning forwards along the port side. From the Crystal Bar, one passes the Theatre, the Golden Lion Pub, the Photo Shop, The Grand Lounge and the Tours Office before reaching the Yacht Club Bar. Returning forwards along the port side is the cruise staff offices, The Grand Lounge again, the Casino, and the Theatre again before arriving back at the Crystal Bar.

Quarter Deck

Starting forward are the Princess Grill (port) and Britannia Grill (starboard). These are not accessible from the Quarter Deck, but from stairs down from the Upper Deck. The Princess Grill is also accessible from the Princess Grill Bar on One Deck below. Aft of the Grills on the Quarter Deck is the Caronia Restaurant spanning the full width of the ship. There are then enclosed promenades down both sides of the ship to the Lido aft, which is again across the width of the ship. The images below are arranged as if walking aft along the starboard side, returning forwards along the port side. Outside the Caronia Restaurant is a large model of the Mauretania. From 2006, this was joined by a model of the 1948 Caronia. First on the Starboard Promenade is the Chart Room bar. This is followed by the Queens Room, and the Lido. Retuning forwards along the Port Promenade is the Queens Room again, the Library and the Ocean Bookshop.
