are devoted to postcards and photographs of the Royal Rotterdam
Lloyd fleet of ocean liners. An alphabetical list of ships covered on this page
is shown below. The
table beneath
gives complete
postcard histories of selected ships. Below the table a Fleet List of selected commercial
and company cards is shown in chronological order. I believe
every class of passenger ship delivered since 1900 is included.
I hope to add additional cargo and cargo-passenger ships later.
Details on this page are taken from Duncan Haws' Merchant Fleets
Vol.35, and reference numbers refer to those in this book. Dates
by the ships' headings refer to service with Rotterdam Lloyd,
not the total lifespan of the ship.

- 62-63: Two
sisters of 5470 grt. Sindoro served with Portuguese line
Nacional as Pedro Gomes until 1932. Goentoer was
scrapped. (Passengers as built:- 1st: 80, 2nd: 38 + 400 troops
forward).

- 67-70: Four
sisters of 4700 grt were built between 1904 and 1907. They were
Ophir (1904-18), Wilis (1905-24), Rindjani
(1907-1926) and Kawi 1907-1926. Wilis, Rindjani
and Kawi were all sold to the Turkish State Shipping Co
and survived into the 1950s. (Passengers as built:- 1st: 60,
2nd: 37, 3rd: 34, 4th:30).

- Tabanan 1908-1930
- Tambora
1910-1931
-
- 81/82: Sisters
of 5600 grt. Sold to in 1930/31, Tambora was scrapped,
but Tabanan survived as Turkish Ege until 1954.
(Passengers as built:- 1st: 77, 2nd: 50, 3rd: 30).

- Insulinde 1912-1933
-
- 102: Entered
service 1914. Insulinde was sold to French company Cyprien
Fabre in 1933, and renamed Banfora. She was captured by
a British armed merchant cruiser in 1942, and served as a troopship
under Elder Dempster management until 1946, when she was returned
to Fabre. Banfora received a rebuilding in 1950, acquiring
a shorter funnel. She was scrapped in Japan in 1957. (9615 grt,
Passengers as built:- 1st: 111, 2nd: 112, 3rd: 40, 4th: 40).

delayed during WW1. Second funnel, a dummy, removed in 1928.
Sold to USSR in 1934, she was not scrapped until 1979. (9891

44).

(serial A9497) is shown below.

poster shows the Patria, is by Jos Rovers and dates from
ca.1924.

shows Patria after the second (dummy) funnel had been
removed in 1928.

- Tjerimai 1921-1933
-
- 119: Ordered
1914 as Hamburg ship Marie Woermann, but passed to the
Netherlands after WW1. She was laid up in 1930 when Dempo
and Baloeran entered service. Sold in 1933, becoming Egyptian
El Nil, but chartered by the British as a troopship 1940-50,
managed by Furness-Withy. She was scrapped in 1954. (7690 grt,
Passengers as built:- 1st: 140, 2nd: 80, 3rd: 40).

- Slamat 1923-1941
-
- 126: Built
1923 as the final Dutch turbine mailship on the East Indies service.
Bombed whilst assisting with the allied evacuation of Greece
in 1941. (11406 grt, Passengers as built:- 1st: 140, 2nd: 155,
3rd: 70, 4th:32).

- 127: Built
1926 as the first Dutch motorship on the East Indies mail service.
Served until WW2, when used as a troopship. Returned to service
1949, after rebuilding with extra cargo space. Sold in 1956,
becoming Bianca C. Chartered to Messageries Maritimes
in 1958-63 as Melanesian, then broken up. (10825 grt,
Passengers as built:- 1st: 140, 2nd: 182, 3rd: 68)

- Kota Inten Class

- 127-135:
A series of eight cargo passenger vessels used on the fast cargo
service from Rotterdam to the Dutch East Indies. They carried
28 passengers, plus up to 2000 pilgrims between the Indies and
Jeddah. The other ships were:- Kota Radja (1927-42), Kota
Baroe (1929-57), Kota Tjandi (1930-43), Kota Agoeng
(1930-58), Kota Pinang (1930-41), Kota Nopan (1931-43)

- Sibajak 1928-1959

- 137: Built
1928 for the Rotterdam-Batavia service. Served until WW2, when
used as a troopship. Returned to service 1950, converted to an
emigrant ship (956 passengers), running to Australia, New Zealand,
Canada and South Africa. In 1959 operated on the Round-the-World
service, but was sold for demolition in 1959. (12226 grt, Passengers
as built:- 1st: 212, 2nd: 174, 3rd: 68)

- Baloeran 1930-1943

- 138: Built
1930 for the Rotterdam-Dutch East Indies service. Served until
WW2, when captured by the Germans and used as a hospital ship
until mined in 1943.
