Saga

Saga - Ville de Bordeaux - Nessebar

(Swedish Lloyd, French Line, Balkanturist)

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the Swedish Lloyd ferry Saga of 1946.

Saga was ordered from Gotaverken (Gothenburg) who subcontracted the hull construction to Lindholmes. Saga was launched without machinery in 1940, but laid up until after the war. Saga was not completed until May 1946, when she enyered service with Swedish Lloyd between Gothenburg and London, joining Suecia 1929) and Britannia (1929). Saga was 420ft long, 6458grt, and carried 340 passengers (160 first, 80 second, 100 third). Four Gotaverken diesels were geared to a single screw, and 6700 combined bhp gave a speed of 18.5 knots. Saga was designed for winter cruising, undertaking voyages in her first year to Norway and the Canaries. Saga was joined by a further new building, the Patricia, in 1951. These four ships proved to have far too much capacity for the London Gothenburg route, even in summer, and Saga was sold to CGT (French Line) in 1956, followed by Patricia's sale to Hamburg America in 1957, leaving the 1929 sisters to run alone until car ferries arrived in 1966.

Ville de Bordeaux was used by CGT (French Line) to replace the Maroc on the Bordeaux-Casablanca service. Ville de Bordeaux then moved to Marseille/Nice-Corsica services in 1960. Ville de Bordeaux was sold to Bulgaria in 1964, and ran between Varna and USSR ports as the Nessebar until 1975, when she was scrapped.

Ville de Bordeaux
(French Line: 1956-1964)

Ville de Bordeaux was built in Gothenburg in 1946 as the Swedish Lloyd Saga. She operated on their Gothenburg-London service until 1956, when she was acquired by CGT to replace the Maroc on the Bordeaux-Casablanca service, where she had proved to be too large. Ville de Bordeaux moved to Marseille/Nice-Corsica services in 1960. Ville de Bordeaux was sold to Bulgaria in 1964, and ran between Varna and USSR ports as the Nessebar until 1975, when she was scrapped.
