Metro Transportes do Sul - Simplon Postcards

The Metro Transportes do Sul is part of the transport infrastructure being provided for the substantial housing and office developments on the south side of the Tagus estuary opposite Lisbon. When the current construction is complete, there will be three lines 1, 2 and 3 as shown on the map below. At the time of our visit in March 2008, the faint sections on the map were not open, and a temporary route 23 was in use between Corroios and Universidade, in addition to line 2 (Corroios to Pragal). Access to visitors from Lisbon will be much easier once lines 1 and 3 to the ferry terminal at Cacilhas are open. Click to open larger image in new window
There are connections with Fertagus trains at Corroios to Pragal, and with CP at Pragal. Whilst bus connections are suggested at Universidade, we could find no stops within 200m of the station, although civil engineering works continue on the adjacent road. The temporary route structure seems beyond the indicators at stops, which were meaningless at Universidade. In other respects, the system is very substantially laid out, with only a couple of tight curve radii. The vehicles are 24 Siemens eight-axle cars 001-024. Siemens now calls them Combino Plus (007 was on trial in Melbourne in 2007 lettered up as such), though they have little in common with the original Combino, eg the bodies are steel rather than aluminium. 33 m long and 2.65 m wide with 4 x 100 kW motors. The trams are smooth and comfortable and capable of high speeds on many sections. Photography on the system was discouraged by staff members. For details of services see:- www.mts.pt
