Chichester Harbour Tours

Wingate III of Chichester Harbour Water Tours operates public cruises and charters from the jetty at Itchenor, south of Chichester in West Sussex.

Wingate III was a lifeboat on the P&O liner Canberra, she saw action in the Falklands war and helped rescue the marines from the Sir Galahad in 1989. The Canberra returned to the UK and was sold for scrapping in 1997 and her lifeboats were sold off. Wingate, as she was then known, went to Scotland as a fishing trip boat.

Wingate III was purchased by Chichester Harbour Water Tours in 1998 and brought to Chichester Harbour, after a major refit in Dell Quay boat yard she started work doing the job she does today. Sailing times are tide-dependant, so check the official website before travelling:- www.chichesterharbourwatertours.co.uk

Every winter Wingate III goes up to Birdham ship yard for her annual refit and paint up to keep her seaworthy and looking smart for the visitors she will carry in the coming season. Wingate III can also be chartered for any type of passenger carrying job from parties to film work.

Cruise on Wingate III in Chichester Harbour

Click on images to open a larger version in a new tab/window

Wingate III operates public cruises and charters from the jetty at Itchenor in West Sussex. Cruises are dependent on tides, so check the website for the sailing timetable before travelling. The routes taken also vary according to tide levels, and on the cruise I took in June 2009 we travelled north towards Dell Quay because the tide was at its height.

Wingate III is a very professionally run boat, even supplying hot and cols drinks and snacks - quite an achievement on such a small boat. The crew are extremely friendly and knowledgeable, providing expert details about the local geography and wildlife. I would recommend a trip on this vessel.
