Provence - Enrico C - EnricoCosta - Symphony - Aegean Spirit - Ocean Glory 1

This page is devoted to postcards of the long-lived, British-built, SGTM liner Provence. She was completed by Swan Hunter on the Tyne in 1951, for the SGTM service from Marseille to Dakar and South America. She was sold in 1965 to Costa Line, who had already operated her under charter. Provence was renamed Enrico C and again in 1987 as Enrico Costa. She was then sold in 1994 to Starlauro, operating as the Symphony. The Starlauro fleet was renamed MSC in 1995. In 2000, she was chartered from MSC to Golden Sun Cruises, as the Aegean Spirit. In 2001 she began operations as Ocean Glory 1, but was refused permission to sail from Dover in July after failing safety and hygiene tests. She remained at Dover at the end of August 2001, with reports in the papers that the crew were still on board, unpaid, and running out of food. Ocean Glory 1 did not sale commercially again, being sold for scrap for $1.7 MUSD.

Aegean Spirit
(Golden Sun: 2000-2001)

In 2000, Symphony was under charter to Golden Sun Cruises, and was renamed Aegean Spirit (earlier reports suggested Aegean II, though I do not know if this was ever carried).

This postcard of Aegean Spirit, showing correct colours, has been issued by Nelson de Barros Pereira. It shows Aegean Spirit at Patmos, Greece, on 12th July 2000, using a photograph by the publisher.

Ocean Glory 1
(2001)

In 2001, Symphony began operating as the Ocean Glory 1. She was prevented from sailing from Dover on 3rd July 2001, having failed safety and hygiene inspections. I am not aware of any postcards issued as Ocean Glory 1. The photograph below of Ocean Glory 1 was taken by Mike Tedstone in Piraeus on Monday 18th June 2001, shortly before her problems in Dover. She was still owned by an MSC subsidiary at this time.

The photographs below were taken by Ian Boyle in Dover on Friday 10th August 2001. Ocean Glory 1 had been moved to the Eastern Breakwater. There were reports in the newspapers that the crew were still on board, unpaid, and running out of food.
