"North Co"), plus their successors P&O Scottish
Ferries. This page shows the earlier passenger and cargo ships
of the company. Page

This
fleet postcard showing St Ola (1), St Rognvald (2), St Magnus
(6) and St Sunniva (2) was issued for the 150th Anniversary
of P&O in 1987.

Highlander (1939-40)
St
Catherine (2) (1940)
Highlander was purchased from the
Aberdeen, Newcastle & Hull Steam Co in October 1939 to replace
vessels handed over to the Admiralty. She was attacked by bombers
on 2nd August 1940, and managed to shoot two down. The wreckage
of one of them landed on her decks. She resumed service after
three weeks with the name St Catherine (2). Unfortunately
she was attacked again in November 1940, and was lost with the
lives of 14 people.
