Isles of Scilly SS Co

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company and other related ships which have served the Scilly Isles.

Between 1858-1872 the Scilly Isles Steam Navigation Company operated the Little Western. From 1871 until 1918, the main operator to the islands was the West Cornwall Steamship Company of Penzance, who used the Earl of Arran (1871-1872 - 144grt), Queen of the Bay (1874-1885 - 138grt), and the Lady of the Isles (1875-1905 - 152 grt), the first purpose-designed steamer on the run. She was joined in 1889 by the larger Lyonnesse (1889-1918 - 329grt), which became the mainstay of services for almost thirty years. Lady of the Isles was sold in 1905, and replaced by the Deerhound from Blackpool, although she stayed only two years and was used mainly on excursions. The West Cornwall Steamship Company went into liquidation in 1907, but Lyonnesse was sold to a new company with the same name.

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Company was formed in 1919, and ran the Peninnis (1) (ex-Argus) from 1920 until 1927 when the first of the three ships name Scillonian arrived. Scillonian (1) was followed by Scillonian (2) in 1956, and the Scillonian III, built in Appledore in 1977. Growing traffic had resulted in the building of a second ship, the Queen of the Isles, in 1965, but she was soon chartered out then sold. A small coaster carry just six passengers, the Gry Maritha, was acquired in 1990 for all year cargo and winter passenger services, Scillonian III being laid up through the winter.
