Viking Line

Page 4 - 1989-2002

This page is devoted to postcards of the Viking Line, and covers ships delivered from 1989 to the present day. An alphabetical list of ships covered on this page is shown below. The Viking Line - Header Page has brief history of the company and a table of individual ship histories. Below the table are official postcards of the fleet in alphabetical order. Other Viking Line pages:- Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3

The early 1970s Viking Line fleet soon required replacement by a series of larger ships from 1979. These ships are covered onthis page. Rederi AB Sally were the dominant Viking Line partner at this time, with the delivery of Viking Saga, Viking Sally and Viking Song, all in 1980. Around this time, Sally also acquired Vaasanlaivat, started operations across the English Channel and became involved in cruising activities (all to be covered on separate web pages).

An even larger series of ships were delivered between 1985-92, which are covered on Viking Line - Page 3 and Viking Line - Page 4. The Sally influence decreased when some of their other operations lost money, SF Line and Slite taking over the Helsinki route in 1985 when the Mariella and Olympia were delivered. Sally were acquired by Silja group owners EFFOA and Johnson Line, and were forced to leave the Viking consortium in 1987. In the early 1990s, the Slite company ran into financial difficulties, and their ships were sold, leaving just SF Line, which renamed itself to Viking Line.

Cinderella was built by Wärtsilä Marine Ab, Turku, for SF-Line, part of the Viking Line consortium. Cinderella entered service in 1989 on their Helsinki-Stockholm service, but has subsequently operated on various other routes, including those to Tallinn. In 2000 Cinderella was refurbished at Turku Repair Yards. From 2002, she began operating cruises to Riga. In 2003 she received further modifications at Turku Repair Yards, and ownership transferred to Viking Rederi AB, Stockholm, who renamed her Viking Cinderella. She received a new white livery, with the name Cinderella on the hull sides (ie: not registered name Viking Cinderella). Viking Cinderella was used for Stockholm-Mariehamn cruises.

Gabriella (1997- )

Gabriella was built as the Frans Suell by Brodogradiliste Split, Croatia. Frans Suell entered service in May 1992 on the Euroway service between Malmö-Travemünde/Lübeck. In 1993, the route changed to Copenhagen-Malmö-Travemünde-Lübeck, and marketing was undertaken by Silja Line, who provided their Silja Festival to run in partnership. The Euroway service was closed in March 1994, and Frans Suell was chartered to Silja Line for service between Stockholm-Mariehamn-Turku/Åbo as the Silja Scandinavia. In 1996, she was sold to Viking Line for delivery in April 1997, joining sisterships Amorella and Isabella. A fourth sistership is Crown of Scandinavia. She was renamed Gabriella, entering service between Stockholm and Helsinki. She has subsequently served on other Viking Line routes.
