Tramway de Nice - Lignes d'Azur

Page 1: Route T1

This page illustrates new route T1 of the Nice Tramway, opened 2007. Nice Trams - Page 2 illustrates the tram fleet.

The original Nice tramway, the Tramway de Nice et du Littoral, ran between 1897 and 1953. This consisted of a coastal route Cagnes-sur-Mer-Nice-Beaulieu-Monte Carlo-Menton in addition to the Nice urban network, with 144 km of route at its peak in 1925.

The new Nice tramway opened on 24th November 2007, following an extended construction period starting in July 2003 (it was originally planned to open winter 2004/2005). The initial U-shaped route T1 is 8.7 km long with 20 stations linking Las Planas in the north-west with Pont Michel in the north-east. There are plans to extend this route 4.7 km to the east to La Trinité. A second route T2 is being finalised running from Nice Port to the Airport, crossing T1 at Garibaldi. Initially planned to run along the promenade, but later planned to run one block away from the sea. Subsequent plans reverted to the promenade route. This route could be extended to Cagnes-sur-Mer and Sophia Antipolis in the east. A third route T3 could run north to Lingostière (connecting with the CP). Other plans to build a new cruise and ferry port near the airport might conceivably change this.

Rolling stock consists of 20 Alstom Citadis trams, with distinctive end design (as is usual with these vehicles). All vehicles are named after local towns/areas. They have dimensions of 33 m x 2.65 m, carry 215 people (54 seated) and a speed of 70 km/h maximum. The trams have five sections and can be extended in the future to a length of 44 m. Platforms have been built to accommodate the longer trams, and based on how busy services were throughout the days on my visit midweek in February, this might be sooner rather than later.

It was decided that it would not be appropriate to have overhead wires across Place Masséna and Place Garibaldi. Initially a system similar to that at Bordeaux was proposed, with a centre rail. However, this was changed to the use of battery power across these sections. Trams drop their pantographs at Masséna southbound, and raise them again at Opéra. They are lowered again one just stop later at Cathédrale, raising them again at Garibaldi. The system seems to work well. The raising for just a few hundred metres between Opéra and Cathédrale is presumably precautionary - I would hope they are capable of travelling from Masséna right through to Garibaldi if necessary.

Las Planas

A large modern structure has been built at Las Planas, the northern terminal of Ligne T1, which serves as a combined station, depot, workshop and park-and-ride car park. Free parking is available if you buy more than a standard €1 single (an all day ticket for all Nice transport costs a reasonable €4, with 7 days for just €15). There are plentiful signs warning that your €1 tram ticket will not allow you to exit the car park.

Trams arrive at this platform and then disappear into the tunnel behind to the depot.
A new tram then appears in the platform behind (trams are all double ended, but do not seem to reverse directly at this terminus)
The main workshop is behind the photographer, and trams complete almost a 360 degree loop to gain access

Masséna

During Nice Carnival week in February, grandstands are installed in Place Masséna. The tram route is
split into two sections whilst carnival processions are under way (usually in the evenings).

Garibaldi

Place Garibaldi was the only section of the tramway where major landscaping was still under way in February 2008. This had been completed by my February 2009 visit, and the end result is a huge improvement on the state before the tramway, when it was an area of traffic chaos and bad parking.
