This page shows images of the Metrosassari, also known as the Metrotranvia di Sassari.

Metrotranvia di Sassari is a 950mm gauge tram-train system operated by ARST Gestione FdS, later ARST SpA (Trasporti Regionali della Sardegna). The single route has a new urban section which links to the existing suburban narrow gauge Sorso branch line, also used by railcars of the Ferrovie della Sardegna (FdS). The system is single-track with passing places. The 2.45 km (1.5 miles) urban tramway section of the line (from Stazione to Emiciclo Garibaldi) opened in October 2006, linking the railway station with the city centre via the hospital district. Services over the railway section began in September 2009. This section is 1.9 km long and connects Sassari's railway station with the district of Santa Maria di Pisa. This FdS branch also has a diesel railcar service through to Sorso (10km).

Services are run with just three Sirio trams and only two are needed off-peak. Numbered SS01-SS03, they were designed by Pininfarina and built by AnsaldoBreda. The Sirio design has also been ordered by Florence, Naples, Milan, Gothenburg, Athens, Debrecen and Samsun.

Electrification is under construction beyond Santa Maria to Li Punti and Baldinca, and planned to extend through to Sorso. It is also planned to electrify the line to Alghero (28km) which has received massive civil engineering investment in recent years to renew tracks and build huge new bridges to shorten the route where the railway previously followed the contours around the valley. In leisurely Sardegna, the gestation period for the existing system was quite lengthy, so I do expect trams in Alghero any time soon, particularly in the current financial climate.

Piazza Marconi

The urban tram section has a separate right-of-way, but no noticeable priority at the many junctions. Other road traffic is heavy along the Piazza Marconi - Viale Italia section and progress is very slow for a modern system.

Sassari Stazione

Sassari is the main railway station of the Italian city of Sassari, the second largest city of Sardinia. It is owned by the Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), the national rail company of Italy, and also by the Ferrovie della Sardegna (FdS). The station was inaugurated in 1884, when the FS line from Cagliari was completed. In 1888 it became the terminal of the Sassari-Alghero line, owned by FdS. During the Second World War, on 14 May 1943, it was damaged during a bombardment.

Located in the north-western side of the city and close to the city centre, the large station building has 3 floors. The stop for the Metrotranvia di Sassari is in front of the station, the line running alongside the station to join the line towards. Track gauge used in the station is mainly standard (1,435) and partly narrow (950 mm). Narrow gauge is used by the three lines owned by the FdS to Alghero, Sorso and Nulvi. Three terminal tracks, also used by FdS trains, are located north of the building. There are three through tracks served by platforms, and four other tracks used for freight traffic.

Sassari station is served by FS regional trains to Porto Torres, Olbia, Oristano and Cagliari.

Santa Maria di Pisa

The Metrotranvia di Sassari currently runs along the FdS 950mm gauge line to Sorso as far as Santa Maria di Pisa, where a considerable amount of new house and office building is under way. Reports suggest that electrification is under construction beyond Santa Maria to Li Punti and Baldinca, and it is planned to extend it through to Sorso.
