Costa Europa
Mediterrainean Cruise - March 2008

Page 5: 15th March: Lisbon

This page is one of a series showing a Mediterrainean cruise on Costa Europa in 2008. There is also a full history of Costa Europa.

Cruise Itinerary:- Savona - Sea Day - Malaga - Cádiz - Lisbon - Gibraltar - Alicante - Barcelona - Savona

We also had a full day in Lisbon (the only other being in Cádiz). It was difficult to choose which of the many possible transport options we should take. In the end, the extension at Sintra had to wait, but attempted to travel on Lisbon Carris trams, Transtejo and Soflusa ferries (now combined as Transtejo e Soflusa), and the new light rail system south of the Tagus.

Having previously travelled on all the surviving Lisbon tram routes on service trams, we decided to use the Tourist Tram, which would provide a leasurely trip around many of the interesting parts of the system in less-crowded conditions. The first sercice was not until 10:00, so we first travelled out and back on the ex-Soflusa service to Barreiro. This is now run with fairly spartan and soulless catamarans, with no open deck space.

We returned in time to catch the 10:00 Tourist Tram. However, 15 minutes into the journey we were held up by a preceding service tram which had hit a motorcycle. Police porcedures were going to take a while, and the driver returned our fares. We caught a service tram back and proceeded to take the ex-Transtejo ferry service from Cais de Sodre to Cacilhas. This is still run with conventional ferries, but they are also dull enclosed affairs which make photography difficult.

Cacilhas a short taxi ride took us to the terminus of the new MTS (Metro Transportes do Sul) tramway at Corroios, where it connects with the railway from Lisbon. We travelled the length of the current system to Universidade and back to Parque da Paz where we caught a bus back to Cacilhas. The MTS line to connect with ferries at Cacilhas is still under construction. Long waits at Universidade and Parque da Paz prevented us from boarding the veteran car ferry across to Belem, which we missed by seconds. We had to take the dull ferry back Cais de Sodre after which I took the Carris tram to the Maritime Museum before returning to the ship.

Lisbon Ferries

Lisbon has a superb location on the River Tagus, and there remains an intensive network of ferry services across the river, despite the imposing Ponte 25 de Abril bridge which links the two sides and carries both rail and road traffic. Even a car ferry service has survived the arrival of the bridge, unusual in such circumstances, and the ferries on this route are of an extremely distinctive design. Since 1975, the Lisbon ferries have been operated by two companies, Transtejo and Soflusa (originally Portuguese Railways (CP)) These are now combined as Transtejo e a Soflusa. In 2008, six basic Transtejo e a Soflusa routes remain, operated by 22 fast catamarans, 2 car ferries and 14 conventional ferries. I have five pages of Lisbon ferry images linked from the Lisbon Ferries Header.

Metro Transportes do Sul

The Metro Transportes do Sul is part of the transport infrastructure being provided for the substantial housing and office developments on the south side of the Tagus estuary opposite Lisbon. The vehicles are 24 Siemens eight-axle cars 001-024. Siemens now calls them Combino Plus (007 was on trial in Melbourne in 2007 lettered up as such), though they have little in common with the original Combino, eg the bodies are steel rather than aluminium. 33 m long and 2.65 m wide with 4 x 100 kW motors.
