Funchal

Funchal was built in 1961 for the Portuguese line Empresa Insulana de Navegacao, Lisboa, and was used on the Lisbon-Azores-Madeira route. She was reconditioned as a fulltime cruise ship in 1973, when her steam turbines were replaced by diesels.

In 1974 Funchal was transferred, along with other surviving Portuguese passenger liners, to CTM (Companhia Portuguesa de Transportes Maritimos). Her exterior profile has changed little, with only a small extra deck added over the stern, and large tenders now carried in front of the bridge (since removed). Funchal is 9846grt in size, 501 ft long and carries 402 passengers. She is currently owned by Arcalia Shipping, Panama, and has been marketed as International Cruises and Classic International Cruises.

Funchal has been lucky with official postcards, which are almost all attractive ship portraits. It is a pity some of the major cruise lines cannot follow suite.

This modern postcard of Funchal, printed summer 2000, is published by the photographer Nelson de Barros Pereira.
The photograph was taken at Fernando de Noronha, Brasil, on 21st January 2000. It shows the additional accommodation
which has been added at the stern since the photograph above, although it does not seem to have spoilt her lines too much.

Two official Classic International Cruises postcards below of Funchal,
Released late 2000, show the extended accommodation aft more clearly, and the revised
funnel colours carried. Funchal was operating on a charter from Cuba at this time.
