Star Cruises - Page 2

These pages are devoted to postcards and photographs of the Star Cruises fleet. This page shows the purpose-built Star Cruises vessels, including cards already issued of designs not due in service until 2001-2004. It will also show transferred mid-size ships from NCL.

Of the five large ships ordered, only SuperStar Virgo is in the 2005 Star Cruises fleet, the others having been transferred to NCL. Smaller ships in the Star Cruises fleet are being disposed of ( SuperStar Aries, SuperStar Capricorn, etc) whilst the mid-sized ships in the NCL fleet will be transferred to Star Cruises as further large newbuildings are delivered. The first transfer is due to be Norwegian Sea in summer 2005, to be followed by Norwegian Dream, Norwegian Wind, Norwegian Majesty, and Norwegian Crown. Norwegian Sea became SuperStar Libra (2) in September 2005

SuperStar Leo
(Star Cruises: 1998-2004)

The first new Star Cruises vessel was SuperStar Leo. She was 76,800grt and carried 2000 passengers. SuperStar Virgo is a sistership. It was originally planned to move SuperStar Leo to the NCL fleet in 2001, as Norwegian Leo. However, it was decided to transfer SuperStar Libra as Norwegian Star (2) in her place. In the event, SuperStar Leo was transferred to NCL in 2004 as the Norwegian Spirit.

SuperStar Libra (1)
SuperStar Scorpio

SuperStar Libra, and sistership SuperStar Scorpio, were ordered from Meyer-Werft, Papenburg, to be delivered in 2001 and 2002. Six months before delivery, it was decided that SuperStar Libra, would be transferred to the NCL fleet, rather than move SuperStar Leo (as the Norwegian Leo) as was originally planned. SuperStar Libra was delivered to NCL as Norwegian Star (2) in 2001. SuperStar Scorpio was delivered to NCL as Norwegian Dawn in December 2002. Both ships are around 92,000grt.

SuperStar Sagittarius II

Two SuperStar Sagittarius-class vessels were planned 2003/2004, and were to be 112,000grt. The orders were cancelled in 2000, and no ships were built of this size, although two further 93000grt were delivered to NCL in 2005, the Norwegian Jewel and Pride of Hawaii.

Papenburg Cards showing the Star Cruises Fleet

A number of cards showing Star Cruises vessels have been issued in Papenburg, home of Meyer-Werft who are building the Star Cruises new tonnage. This interesting composition shows a selection of notable Meyer-built ships together around the yard (a faked picture of course). In addition to Oriana and Silja Europa are vessels of HAL, Celebrity and Star Cruises.
