Page 3: The New Fleet Livery

These pages are devoted to postcards and photographs of the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) fleet (previously the Norwegian Caribbean Line). NCL is now owned by Star Cruises. NCL are also owners of Orient Lines. The Table below shows complete postcard histories of selected ships. Below the table are official and commercial cards of the recent NCL fleet in chronological order.

NCL Page 1 covers the first generation of purpose-built cruise ships, along with the Norway. NCL Page 2 covers the second generations of mid-sized cruise ships. This page covers the NCL fleet which survived to receive the new blue livery. NCL Page 4 covers the 70000grt and over mega-ships delivered from 1999.

In 2005, smaller ships in the Star Cruises fleet are being disposed of ( SuperStar Aries, SuperStar Capricorn, etc) whilst the mid-sized ships in the NCL fleet will be transferred to Star Cruises as further large newbuildings are delivered to NCL. The first transfer is due to be Norwegian Sea in summer 2005, to be followed by Norwegian Dream, Norwegian Wind, Norwegian Majesty, and Norwegian Crown.

Norway (1979- )

The France entered service in 1962, and was the longest (but not largest) Atlantic liner at 1035ft. She was withdrawn in 1974 on the removal of government subsidies. She was laid up at le Havre until 1979, when she was bought by Norwegian Caribbean Line and renamed Norway. The postcards on this page are all official NCL releases. Star Cruises have announced that Norway will be transferred to their own fleet. the full NCL postcard history has been added on this link. Her earlier history as the France is covered on this link.

Leeward (1995- )

Leeward was built in 1980 as Viking Saga for Rederi Ab Sally, part of the Viking Line consortium, and used on their Helsinki-Stockholm service. Her sistership was Viking Song. She was replaced in 1986 by Olympia, and was modified for cruising out of Helsinki as the Sally Albatross. She was burnt out whilst undergoing a refit in Stockholm in 1990. By this time Rederi Ab Sally had been acquired by Effjohn International, owners of Silja Line. Although declared a total constructive loss, the lower hull was used to create a new ship, also called Sally Albatross, reappearing in 1992. In 1994, she grounded whilst on a cruise, suffering major damage. After repairs, she was chartered to Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) as the Leeward. The Baltic cruise market had been hit badly by the Estonia disaster in September 1994. In 1999 the charter was transferred to NCL's owners, Star Cruises, for service in the Far East as SuperStar Taurus. The charter was terminated by Star Cruises in 2002, and she returned to her owners Silja Line for service as Silja Opera. Silja Opera was not part of the sale of Silja Line to Tallink in 2006, and she remained laid up at Tilbury for much of that year.

Norwegian Star (1) (1996- )

Norwegian Star (1) was originally built as the Royal Viking Line cruise ship Royal Viking Sea in 1973. Royal Viking Line were acquired by Kloster (NCL) in 1984, and initially retained their separate identity. Royal Viking Sea was transferred to Royal Cruise Line in 1993 as the Royal Odyssey (II). The Royal Viking Line name was sold to Cunard in 1994. Royal Odyssey was transferred into the main NCL fleet in 1996 as Norwegian Star. She briefly operated for the NCL subsidiary Norwegian Capricorn Line in the Australian market, and in 2001 was part of the Star Cruises fleet. After a period laid up as Crown, she was placed on weekly cruises from Valencia as Crown Mare Nostrum for Spanish Cruise Line, by this time owned by the Dutch Cruise Club. From 2005 she is running as the Albatros (2) for Phoenix Reisen, replacing the Albatros (1) (previously Sylvania, Fairwind, Sitmar Fairwind and Dawn Princess, which was sold for scrap by owners V-Ships).

Norwegian Sea (NCL: 1997-2005)

Norwegian Sea was built by Wartsila in 1988 as Seaward (42276 gross tons, 216metres in length and 1798 maximum passengers). Seaward was renamed Norwegian Sea in 1997. In 2005 she was transferred to the Star Cruises fleet as SuperStar Libra (2).

Norwegian Crown

Crown Odyssey was built by Meyer of Papenburg, and was delivered to Royal Cruise Line in 1988, a year before the line was sold to NCL. In 1996 the various NCL fleets were reorganised, and Crown Odyssey became the Norwegian Crown in the main NCL fleet. More recently, she has been transferred to NCL-owned Orient Lines, and has reverted to her original name Crown Odyssey.

Norwegian Dynasty (1997-1999)

Norwegian Dynasty was chartered by NCL from Effjohn, like the Leeward. She had been built for Crown Cruise Line as Crown Dynasty, but later served with Cunard as Cunard Crown Dynasty (I presume she was not officially renamed). NCL renamed her Norwegian Dynasty, but she later returned to Commodore Cruise Line with original name Crown Dynasty. Commodore Cruise Line failed around the end of 2000, and the ship was sold to Fred Olsen Cruises as their Braemar. She has a sistership in service with Star Cruises named Superstar Gemini.

A complete history of this ship is available on this link.

Norwegian Majesty (1997- )

Norwegian Majesty was originally ordered by Birka Line for their 24hour cruises out of Stockholm. Following the bankruptcy of builders Wartsila, the contract was resold to Majesty Cruise Line and the vessel was completed as Caribbean cruise ship Royal Majesty in 1992. She was transferred into the NCL fleet in 1997 as Norwegian Majesty, and in 1997 received a similar lengthening to Norwegian Wind/Dream.
